NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt used an impressive performance on the mound from freshman Devin Futrell to defeat Lipscomb 7-1 on Tuesday evening at First Horizon Park.

Futrell (5-0) threw Vanderbilt’s first nine-inning complete game of the season, and the program’s first since Kumar Rocker went the distance against Mississippi State on April 23, 2021. The lefty held Lipscomb to one run on two hits. He recorded six strikeouts with just two walks.

Lipscomb scored its only run of the game on a sac fly in the bottom of the first to go up 1-0.

Jack Bulger led off the top of the second with a single and moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch. Gavin Casas and Javier Vaz each drew walks to load the bases with one out before Calvin Hewett delivered a two-run single up the middle to put Vanderbilt in front 2-1.

After a pitching change, Vaz and Hewett each came home on wild pitches to give Vandy a 4-1 lead.

The Commodores added a run two frames later in the top of the fourth. Enrique Bradfield Jr. worked a walk, moved to second on another walk, and stole third. Dominic Keegan brought Bradfield home on a sac fly, making it a 5-1 game.

Vandy went ahead 7-1 with a pair of runs in the eighth. Carter Young singled with two outs and after an error and a walk, Keegan singled home two runs with a single up the middle, scoring Young and Bradfield.

Keegan’s three RBI led the offense. Hewett went 1-for-5 with two RBI and a run.

Vanderbilt returns to the Hawk for a three-game series against Tennessee beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday with action airing on ESPN2. Saturday’s 7 p.m. game will be on SEC Network and the Sunday finale at 1 p.m. will air live on SEC Network+.
